24 gauge sheet metal is not very thick at all, despite the "size" of the gauge. The higher the gauge number goes, the thinner the metal becomes. 26 gauge standard steel is .024 inches thick. Galvanized steel is a little thicker and measures .028 inches. Aluminium is the thinnest at a mere .020 inches.
