The internet started as a DARPA project known as ARPANET in 1969. It initially was a network of supercomputing centers. Eventually it developed into the internet that every one is familiar with today.

Although Al Gore likes to say he created the internet, that is not true. It is believed that in 1969 UCLA professor Leonard Kleinrock launched the first internet message from UCLA to Stanford Research Institute.
