How do electrical outlets work?

Electrical outlets supply AC voltage from your utility. They are commonly wired with a live wire, neutral wire and a ground. Old houses may exclude the ground wire. When you plug in a piece of equipment into the outlet, electrical current can flow from the live wire through your equipment and to the neutral wire.

Electrical outlets work by creating a place for electricity to get out and flow through a current. By plugging something in to an outlet you create a circuit.
